| The smaller auto turbo size (though not by much) does allow it to spool faster than an MT turbo but that's really the main reason. The auto turbo will also run out of air earlier than the MT units. It's the torque converter in auto trannies that allow it to build boost of the line. With your foot on the brake and revving it up to about 2500-3000 rpms (on a stock auto TT), you can build positive boost while stationary. The MT trany doesn't have a convertor and therefore isn't able to do this (although you could similarly duplicate it using the brake, clutch, and gas pedal... a very difficult thing to do). Basically the auto tranny will let you launch harder and during gear changes, the power is continually transmitted to the ground via the converter. The MT doesn't have this feature unless you try to speed shift (though it still isn't the same) but that's putting a fair amount of abuse into the tranny if you don't get it right. The auto is quicker but the MT just much more fun.
